Marie Zimmermann was one of America’s most important Arts and Crafts artists, but as her work is quite rare, she has not received the attention she deserves. Now, there is a book about her, and her work is in great demand.
Zimmermann was known primarily for her metalwork, but she also produced some exceptional jewelry, and this suite of pin and earrings is a marvelous example. She used beautiful combinations of intricately cut stones, highlighted with enamels. In this suite, Zimmermann chose lapis, amethyst and moonstone. Unfortunately, the elusive moonstone does not photograph well, but these are very fine “blue flash” moonstones, with a shimmer of blues and silver.
Marie Zimmermann’s jewelry is extremely rare. We had a wonderful bracelet of hers on loan to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in their 20th Century Department, and they have a necklace by her on display.
