The application of electricity for lighting was certainly one of the most important developments in modern history. At first, quite a lot of residential lighting was simply various candelabra forms fitted for light bulbs, but by the 1920's designers were developing very new and inventive designs for table lamps, floor lamps, sconces and ceiling fixtures, and French Art Deco is full of innovations and great lighting design. Of course, designers elsewhere were also enthusiastically exploring this field, and there was some wonderfully innovative lighting design in Austria, Germany, Italy, England, America and many other places. We have outstanding examples of lighting, from French Art Deco through Italian mid-century, and also contemporary design.
